The
ISS-Advanced is the most advanced oilfield engine controller
on the market today. With multiple operating modes and options, you will get
the most performance and control of your production systems. New features
and options are constantly being developed from customer feedback. Custom
operation is also available, just contact RPI with your requirements.
-
- Note: These instructions apply only
to engines and cabling supplied by RPI. DO NOT attempt to connect the
ISS-Advanced to any engine or cable not supplied by RPI. Doing so can
result in damage to the engine and/or the ISS-Advanced. For retrofit
applications, contact RPI. We will be happy to assist you with analysis
of your needs.
The engine ignition switch must be in the “ON” position for electronic
ignition engines (18HP and 25HP Kohler Engines). The ignition switch must be
in the ”OFF” position for battery ignition engines (35HP and 65HP Wisconsin
Engines). When you first power up or reset the ISS-Advanced, you will see a
screen identifying the product, followed by a screen identifying the engine
type and software version of the unit. (May not apply to older units,
contact RPI for an upgrade) Pressing the SETUP key will bypass these screens
and take you to the mode choice menu.
Mode Choice Menu
This screen allows you to choose which operating mode the controller
uses. There are four modes:
- Timed Cycles Only:
Allows you to program the controller for timed operation. Valid ON and OFF
times range from 1 minute to 99 hours and 99 minutes. Time entry begins
with hours. To enter hours, press the desired numbers. For hours from 1-9,
enter number followed by ENTER key. For hours over 9, enter in order. For
example, to enter 10 hours, press 1 then 0, time entry will then proceed
to minutes. To skip entering hours, simply press ENTER key, or enter 00.
Either will take you to minutes entry. Follow same procedure as when
entering hours. If you make a mistake in time entry, press the CLEAR key
to start over. The controller will ask for verification of time entered.
Use ENTER key to accept, CLEAR key to re-enter time.
- Pump off / LPTV:
Allows control of engine by use of external Level, Pressure, Temperature,
or Vibration (or other type) sensor switches. By connecting the Blue and
Brown wires of the cable to your sensors/switches, the controller will
start or stop the engine when the switch activates. Switching the Blue
wire to Ground will cause the controller to start the engine. Switching
the Brown wire to Ground will cause the controller to stop the engine. In
this mode, the controller displays the amount of time that the engine has
run or been off. Manual override is possible at any time using the
START/RUN and STOP keys. Back to Top
- Continuous Run:
This mode allows continuously running the engine. You must use the
START/RUN key to start the engine, STOP key to kill the engine. In this
mode, the controller displays the amount of time that the engine has been
running. Back to Top
- Pump off / Timed:
This mode will continuously run the engine until the Brown wire is
switched to Ground. The controller will then kill the engine and stay off
for the amount of time programmed. The controller will then re-start the
engine and run until the Brown wire is switched to Ground again. Use the
same procedure for time entry as described in number 1 above. In this
mode, the Blue wire has no effect.

Tachometer:
Gives accurate reading of engine speed. Updated once per second, it
instantly responds, even to wide changes in engine speed.
Safety Shutdowns:
RPI Kohler engines come equipped with (2) safety shutdown inputs. Additional
Safety shutdown inputs, up to 5 total, are an available option. Contact RPI
for details. Back to Top
- With either engine type, the Gray wire is Safety shutdown #1.
- With Kohler engines, the Green wire is Safety shutdown #2.
- Active in all operating modes. Connect these wires to your
safety sensors/switches.
- Switching any of these wires to Ground will cause the controller
to kill the engine, display which switch was activated, and display the
amount of time the engine has been off due to Safety shutdown. To avoid
false shutdowns, the switch must remain engaged for at least 1 second,
otherwise it will be ignored. Once you have resolved the problem that
caused the shutdown, press RESET key to program the controller.
Start Warning: In any operating mode, the controller will sound a warning
beeper before starting the engine. The display will show “Starting engine”
and a countdown beginning at 10 seconds. During the last 3 seconds of the
countdown, the beeper will alternate on and off to let the operator know
that startup is imminent. For test purposes, this warning can be bypassed by
pressing the START/RUN key. Back to
Top Stop Key: Pressing the STOP key will kill a running engine at any time.
Hot-Connect: The controller can be connected to a running engine without
killing the engine first. The display will acknowledge that the engine is
running, then proceed normally. Likewise, the unit can be RESET and
re-programmed with the engine running.
Pause / Resume: In Timed Cycle Only mode, pressing the STOP key will kill
the engine and pause the timer at the current amount of time remaining in
the cycle. Pressing the START/RUN key will re-start the engine (after the 10
second countdown), and the cycle will resume from where it was paused.
Pressing the SETUP key while paused will allow you to enter new cycle times.
Low Oil Pressure Shutdown: All RPI engines are equipped with an oil pressure
sensor. This sensor is ignored for the first 30 seconds of run-time, to
allow the engine oil pressure to rise and stabilize. After 30 seconds, if a
low engine oil pressure situation occurs, the controller will sense this and
shut down the engine. A message will flash on-screen, notifying the operator
of the low oil pressure condition. Once the problem is resolved, press RESET
to re-program the controller. Back to
Top Start Failure: When attempting to start the engine, the controller will
engage the starter motor for up to 7 seconds. If the engine fails to start,
the controller will display “Failed to Start – Retry in” and a countdown
from 30 seconds will be displayed.
During the last 10 seconds, the normal 10 second countdown, with warning
beeper, will occur. Pressing START/RUN during the 30 sec. countdown will
jump to the 10 second warning. Pressing START/RUN again will bypass the
10-second warning. The controller will attempt to start the engine up to 5
times, with the 30-second wait between attempts. If the engine fails to
start after 5 attempts, the controller will display a message notifying the
operator of this. Once the problem that prevented startup is resolved, press
RESET to re-program the controller.
Intelligent Re-Start: If the engine stalls for abnormal reasons (not Safety
shutdown or other normal control functions), such as fuel starvation, etc.,
the controller will automatically attempt to re-start the engine, up to 5
times. If in Timed Cycle mode, the full cycle time will be run after
re-start. Back to Top
Minimum Run-Time: The controller will regard any run-time less than 30
seconds to be a failed start attempt (1 of 5). This is useful if the engine
starts up, but dies in less than 30 seconds, to prevent running the battery
down by repeatedly starting. Back to
Top Elapsed Run-Time (E.R.T.): Any time the running engine is stopped (except by
Safety shutdown), the controller will display the combined total time that
the engine has run. This is useful for monitoring the amount of run-time
between oil changes. Once the oil has been changed (or whatever you wish to
monitor), pressing the CLEAR key will zero the E.R.T. Also displayed is the
total elapsed time, in hours, that the engine has run since installation.
This can only be cleared by RPI. This is useful for warranty claims.
Oil-Change Reminder: When the E.R.T reaches 720 hours, the controller will
display a reminder message notifying the operator that the engine oil should
be changed. This reminder will display every time the engine stops, until
the operator clears the E.R.T Back to
